MKIII: Auto-Up Window Switch Mod
If the small tab on your drivers window switch has broken off or if you would simply like to touch the button and have the window go up as well as down automatically just follow this simple 15 minute modification. Thanks to Ben Kalika, Pete Sterling, Dave Wong, and Will Hopwood who described this in previous posts to the mailing list. I performed this procedure when the up tab broke off on my 89.
Remove the two screw hole covers with your fingernail (or very carefully with a small screwdriver) Fig. 1
Gently pry the speaker grille off with a screwdriver Fig. 2
Remove the four screws holding the interior door handle/window switch housing Fig. 3
Disconnect the cable from the back of the switch Fig. 4
Remove the trim plate from the front of the switch Fig. 5 Fig. 6
Remove the two screws holding the switch module to the door handle
Cut off the small tab that sticks out behind the up side of the driver's window switch (show in front of the screwdriver blade Fig. 7 ). I used a small sidecutter normally used for electronics work. I removed the small nub left by the cutters with a miniature file.
This is what the finished switch should look like Fig. 8
Reverse procedure to re-install
